About Temple

This temple of Lord Shiva has been referred in the Puranas that comprise of Kashi Khanda of Skanda Purana. The originally existing temple of Lord Shiva was devastated by the army of Qutub-ud-din-Aibak in 1194 CE at the time when they defeated Raja Kannauj, being the commander of Mohammad Ghori. The construction of the temple was again started during the rule of Shamsuddin Iltumish (1221 to 1266 CE) by the Gujarati merchant. The temple was again devastated in the reign of Hussain Shah Sharqi (1447 till 1458) or Sikandar Lodhi (1489 till 1517). The temple was again built in the reign of Akbar by Raja Man Singh but was embargoed by Hindu followers since they allowed the Mughal emperor marry a Hindu girl and enter their family. The temple was later built by Raja Todar Mal in 1585 where the financial needs were completed by Akbar.
